Equipment Leasing News: North American markets open higher on hopes for progress in Europe

VANCOUVER, BC (September 14, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports North American markets opened higher amid growing confidence that progress can be made on Greece’s debt crisis at a conference call later Wednesday involving the leaders of Greece, France and Germany.

The S&P/TSX composite index added 40 points to 12,245.4, with the health-care and consumer discretionary indices leading the way higher.

Wall Street markets also pushed higher. The Dow Jones gained 71.4 points to 11,177.3, the Nasdaq index was up 22.44 points at 2,554.59 and the S&P index added 2.4 points to 1,175.25.

The Canadian dollar lost 0.48 of a cent to 101 cents US as commodity prices stepped back and investors took in report on second-quarter capacity utilization, which fell slightly to 78.4 per cent in the second quarter from 79 per cent in the prior quarter.

New data on American retail sales also added to fears of another recession.

Consumers spent less last month on autos, clothing and furniture, leaving retail sales unchanged in August, the U.S. Commerce Department said. And, in addition to no growth in August, July was weaker than first thought, the department said.

The flat reading in August was a surprise given reports from retailers during the month that back-to-school shopping and auto sales appeared to have been strong compared with a year ago.

Other data from the U.S. showed companies paid the same amount for wholesale goods last month as a drop in energy prices offset higher food costs.

Falling commodities could serve to mitigate any rise on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The October oil contract lost 78 cents to US$89.43 a barrel, gold futures fell $5.20 to US$1,824.90 and copper shed four cents to US$3.93 a pound.

The rise in stock markets also came despite a downgrade of two of France’s biggest banks.

Moody’s downgraded the credit ratings of French banks Societe Generale and Credit Agricole on Wednesday following a period of huge volatility in the markets as investors fretted about their exposure to Greek debt.

Some sort of move by Moody’s had been widely expected this week since the agency had put them and rival BNP Paribas on review for downgrade in mid-June. But there had been fears that the downgrades might have even been harsher.

The leaders of Greece, France and Germany will seek ways to contain the spiralling debt crisis and prevent it from further roiling global financial markets in a teleconference on Wednesday evening. That will follow days of uncertainty in the markets as to whether Greece will get its next batch of bailout funds to say afloat beyond next month.

In addition, the Italian government has passed a first vote on its austerity plan.

The CAC-40 in France was 1.5 per cent higher, Germany’s DAX was 2.5 per cent higher and Britain’s FTSE 100 index rose 1.7 per cent.

In Canadian corporate news, supermarket operator Empire Company Ltd. (TSX:EMP.A), which operates the Sobeys stores and has interests in real estate and movie theatres, said profits in the quarter ended Aug. 6 were $89.2 million or $1.31 per diluted share.

That compared with $86.3 million or $1.26 per share in the comparable prior-year period, which ended July 31. Revenue was $4.15 billion, up from $4.02 billion as sales increased $128 million or 3.2 per cent. Shares added 11 cents to $57.26.

Gran Tierra Energy Inc. (TSX:GTE) has confirmed new oil discoveries in both Colombia and Argentina and says it plans additional drilling this year in those countries as well as in Brazil. Shares in the company added five per cent or 31 cents to $6.08.

Equipment Leasing News: Gran Tierra (TSX:GTE) confirms South American oil discoveries, plans more exploration

VANCOUVER, BC (September 14, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Gran Tierra Energy Inc. (TSX:GTE) has confirmed new oil discoveries in both Colombia and Argentina and says it plans additional drilling this year in those countries as well as in Brazil.

Gran Tierra said the discoveries in Colombia involved the Melero-1 well and the Jilguero-2 well made by the joint venture with CEPSA Colombia S.A., both located on the Garibay Block in the Llanos Basin.

Gran Tierra Energy, through a wholly owned indirect subsidiary, holds a 50 per cent working interest in the Garibay Block while, CEPSA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Compania Espanola de Petroleos S.A., holds the remaining 50 per cent and is the operator of the property.

In Argentina, the first of three exploration wells to be drilled on the Rinconada Norte Block located in the Neuquen Basin of Argentina has made a new discovery of oil, testing 1,023 barrels of oil equivalent per day, Gran Tierra said.

Americas Petrogas Argentina S.A., a wholly owned subsidiary of America Petrogas Inc. and operator of the block with a 65 per cent working interest, first announced a “significant discovery of oil” at the well earlier this week.

Gran Tierra holds a 35 per cent working interest in the Rinconada Norte Block.

“Gran Tierra is pleased these oil discoveries will contribute to our existing base of reserves and production in Colombia and Argentina while we prepare for additional exploration drilling in these countries and in Brazil in 2011”, said president and CEO Dana Coffield.

Gran Tierra, headquartered in Calgary and incorporated in the United States, holds interests in producing and prospective properties in Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Brazil.

Equipment Leasing News: Empire Co. (TSX:EMP.A) Q1 profit rises to $89.2M; revenue edges up to almost $4.2B

VANCOUVER, BC (September 14, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Supermarket operator Empire Company Ltd. (TSX:EMP.A) has reported an increase in first-quarter net earnings and revenue, largely on the strength of improved sales.

The Nova Scotia-based concern, which operates the Sobeys stores and has interests in real estate and movie theatres, said profits in the quarter ended Aug. 6 were $89.2 million or $1.31 per diluted share.

That compared with $86.3 million or $1.26 per share in the comparable prior-year period, which ended July 31.

Revenue was $4.15 billion, up from $4.02 billion as sales increased $128 million or 3.2 per cent.

Sobeys’ sales equalled $4.11 billion, up from $3.98 billion in the first quarter last year, an increase of $130.8 million or 3.3 per cent. Same-store sales, an important performance metric in the retail industry, rose 1.7 per cent.

The growth in Sobeys’ sales came as a result of modest inflation, increased retail selling square footage from new stores and enlargements, coupled with ongoing sales and merchandising initiatives and product and services innovation, the company said.

“We are pleased with our start to fiscal 2012 as both Sobeys and our investments and other operations segments posted increased earnings in a very competitive environment,” said president and CEO Paul Sobey.

“Sobeys’ improved merchandising and execution combined with ongoing cost and productivity initiatives continue to fuel our ability to sustain growth,” he added.

In additional to its food stores, the company holds a more than 40 per cent interest in Crombie Real Estate Investment Trust, a similar interest in Genstar Development Partnership and operates wholly owned Empire Theatres Ltd..

Equipment Leasing News: Canada could be 1st into recession, bank warns

VANCOUVER, BC (September 14, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Canada’s big banks continued to issue warnings of slowing economic growth Tuesday Sept 13, with the Bank of Nova Scotia suggesting Canada could be among the first of the world’s advanced economies to fall into a technical recession.

And economists with TD cut their prediction for global growth this year.

The Scotiabank report suggested Canada’s economy could show no growth for a second consecutive quarter, the one which ends this month. Canada’s economy contracted by 0.4 per cent in the April-June period.

Some economists consider two quarters of no growth or contraction in economic activity a recession.

The Scotiabank economists say trade was strong in July, but that is being countered by a slump in business investment, inventories that aren’t moving, a flat housing market and government spending cuts.

A 2.2 per cent rise in exports pushed Canada’s trade deficit down to $753 million in July, almost half the level it was at a month earlier.

Statistics Canada said Thursday that exports rose by 2.2. per cent during the month. That more than outpaced the 0.5 per cent increase in imports.

In the last two days, the Royal Bank and TD Bank have both released new forecasts predicting the second half of this year will see slower growth, but they stopping short of predicting an outright recession.

The TD’s report reduced its prediction for global economic growth to 3.2 per cent, from the 3.6 per cent predict it issued in June.

TD also estimated world economic growth will be 3.2 per cent in 2012, a reduction from 3.7 per cent.

It said the risks to global recovery have intensified as both the U.S. and European economies show signs of slowing.

TD said it assumes Greece will default on its debt, but that it will be orderly and not cause a crisis for French and German banks most exposed to Greek debt.

However, it did not rule out the possibility that the default would be poorly managed and create a banking crisis.

Mortgage Lending News: Paramount (TSX:PZG) says Sleeper project in Nevada could hold 3.7M gold ounces

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Paramount Gold and Silver Corp. (TSX:PZG), a TSX-listed U.S. gold miner, saw its shares rise more than 10 per cent after the company reported multimillion-ounce gold and silver deposits at its Sleeper project in Nevada September 13, 2011.

After an early morning trading halt on the TSX and New York Stock Exchanges, Paramount stock rose 24 cents to $2.63, a gain of just over 10 per cent, on the TSX.

Earlier Tuesday, Paramount said tests show the Sleeper project could contain an indicated and measured resource of 2.6 million ounces of gold and 25.3 million ounces of silver.

The project also has an additional inferred resource of 1.1 million ounces of gold and 8.2 million ounces of silver at lower grades.

The resources study was prepared by SRK, a mine engineering and consulting firm.

Mortgage Lending News: Canadian Market Update

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Bay Street stocks are poised for a mixed open Tuesday amid firm energy prices and lingering worries over the euro zone debt situation. Investors concerned over growing risks to European banks after media reports raised doubts about financial support from China.

However, steady energy prices and value buying after recent fall will likely to support stocks during the session.

U.S. stock futures were pointing to a lower open

On Monday, the S&P/TSX Composite Index extended losses for a third session, surrendering 238.72 points or 1.93 percent to 12,148.83.

The price of crude oil was moving higher even as the OPEC and IEA slashed their world oil demand growth forecast. Monday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries slashed its world oil demand growth forecast citing weaker-than-expected driving season in the U.S. and the ongoing sluggish economic performance in the OECD

Earlier today, the International Energy Agency lowered its 2011 global oil product demand growth by 0.20 million barrels per day (mbd) and slashed its 2012 outlook by 0.4 mbd citing lower non-OECD readings and reduced economic growth expectations. The Paris-based agency said that global oil demand this year will be 89.3 mbd on average, up 1.0 mbd year-over-year, and for 2012 demand will average 90.7 mbd, up 1.4 mbd year-over year.

Crude for October gained $1.53 to $89.72 a barrel.

The price of gold moved up after falling heavily in the previous session. Gold for December rose $16.60 to $1,829.90 an ounce.

In corporate news from Canada, Asset manager Brookfield Asset Management, Inc. (BAM, BAM_A.TO) announced a strategic combination of Brookfield Renewable Power Fund (BRC_UN.TO) and Brookfield Renewable Power, Inc. to create the world’s largest listed pure-play renewable power businesses with about $13 billion of power generating assets.

Base-metals miner HudBay Minerals (HBM.TO) announced plans to invest around $ 1 billion to develop its copper mine in Peru.

Wholesale distributor of building products Taiga Building Products (TBL.TO) reported a lower first quarter net income of C$3.6 million or C$0.11 per share compared to C$5.3 million or C$0.16 per share last year.

In economic news from the euro zone, U.K.’s inflation rose to 4.5 percent year-over-year in the month of August compared to a 4.4 percent increase in the previous month. Mortgage Lending News: US Market Update

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Cautious trading has marked the early stages of Tuesday’s session. The major averages are mixed in initial trading, with the Dow edging lower and the Nasdaq showing a modest gain.

Traders shrugged off speculation about a Greek default and its impact on the European financial system late in Monday’s session. Shares had been lower for most of the day, but a rally in the final stages of trading left the major averages higher by the close.

There were signs of caution overnight, amid worries that Italy might have trouble raising funds, but the sentiment improved as the U.S. market neared its open. European markets have moved higher in mid-day trading, but the U.S. indices are mixed in early action on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 21.46 points to 11,039.66. The Nasdaq is up 11.83 points to 2,506.24. The S&P 500 is up 1.48 points to 1,163.75.

Some economic news was released during the morning, though the week’s biggest reports, including retail sales and the consumer price index, are due out later in the week.

The U.S. Labor Department revealed that import prices declined 0.4 percent in August. Import prices were up by 0.3 percent in July. August’s decline was led by a 1.8 percent slide in fuel prices. Excluding fuel, import prices were up by 0.2 percent.

Meanwhile, export prices rose 0.5 percent in August, bouncing back after a decline of 0.4 percent in July.

In corporate news, Best Buy announced earnings before the market opened. The electronics retailer reported a quarterly profit that fell from last year and missed the expectation of market analysts.

On the news, shares of Best Buy are down about 6 percent.

Europe saw early losses amid lingering worries about a Greek default and the possible consequences on the continent’s financial system. The equity markets have made gains during mid-day trading, however, and are now firmly above the unchanged mark.

Germany is up 1.25 percent. France is higher by 1 percent. And the U.K. is trailing a bit with a 0.4 percent advance.

Mortgage Lending News: Q1 loss for oilpatch junior Bengal Energy (TSX:BNG) widens to $1 million

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Bengal Energy Ltd. (TSX:BNG) has reports bigger first-quarter loss in fiscal 2012 as increased revenues were more than offset by higher capital expenditures September 13, 2011.

Bengal said it lost $1 million or two cents per share in the three months ended June, compared with a net loss of $722,000 or four cents per share in the same prior-year period.

Revenue totalled $1.3 million, up from $349,000, while capital expenditures rose to $1.9 million from $90,000 in the prior-year quarter.

The oilpatch junior said it exited the first quarter with $37.6 million in cash, no debt and a balanced portfolio of exploration and development drilling opportunities on an extensive land base in Australia and India.

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Bengal Energy Ltd. (TSX:BNG) has reports bigger first-quarter loss in fiscal 2012 as increased revenues were more than offset by higher capital expenditures September 13, 2011.

Bengal said it lost $1 million or two cents per share in the three months ended June, compared with a net loss of $722,000 or four cents per share in the same prior-year period.

Revenue totalled $1.3 million, up from $349,000, while capital expenditures rose to $1.9 million from $90,000 in the prior-year quarter.

The oilpatch junior said it exited the first quarter with $37.6 million in cash, no debt and a balanced portfolio of exploration and development drilling opportunities on an extensive land base in Australia and India.

Mortgage Lending News: Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT (TSX:CSH.UN) says its COO will leave company Sept. 30

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Chartwell Seniors Housing Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX:CSH.UN) says its chief operating officer Richard Noonan will leave the company at the end of the month.

The Toronto-area property owner said Tuesday Noonan is moving to a new field outside the seniors housing sector.

When Noonan leaves, his job will be assumed on an interim basis by Donna Marasco, the REIT’s senior vice-president of operations.

Chartwell is a real estate investment trust which indirectly owns and operates a range of seniors housing centres — from assisted living to long-term care centres.

Mortgage Lending News: Thompson Creek Metals (TSX:TCM) says new reserves add years to B.C. moly mine’s life

VANCOUVER, BC (September 13, 2011) Clearlease Financial Reports Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. (TSX:TCM) said Sept 13 it’s increasing the reserve estimate for its Endako molybdenum operation in British Columbia by nine per cent, extending its life by nearly two years to 2028.

The mine and mill near Fraser Lake, B.C., currently produce about 11 million pounds a year of the base metal, which is used primarily in steel production.

The company said Monday it now estimates Endako, which is 75 per cent owned by Thompson Creek, has 312.2 million pounds of molybdenum, up nine per cent from the previous estimate of 286.2 million pounds.

The reserves were calculated using an estimated long-term molybdenum price of C$13.50 per pound, or US$12 per pound — making the additional reserves worth about C$350 million and total reserves worth $4.2 billion.

“The updated reserves estimate illustrates the significant value of the Endako mine,” said Kevin Loughrey, Thompson Creek’s chairman and chief executive.

“The current report has revised our reserves estimates as a result of improved engineering, refined geological modeling and new drilling data. We believe the resource base at the Endako mine will continue to expand with our 2011 drilling program and future exploration.”

Thompson Creek is currently building a new mill that is expected to increase throughput to 55,000 tons per day from 31,000. The mill is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2012.
